Wah-Who-Wah to SethBesse, 1927's indefatigable head agent. His many letters and phone calls, in spite of attrition due to deaths, has been responsible for our tribe's surpassing its goal for the 1989 Alumni Fund by a substantial margin.
Our mail contained a goodly number of cards from long-silent classmates, which we were delighted to receive.
John Machen, retired since 1979 in Towson, Md., enjoys getting news about classmates. He has assorted ailments, like most of us, but still enjoys living. He has seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In Pompano Beach, Fla., Jack Thees says, "Glad that I can still confirm to you that Jackie and I are well except for her arthritic hip. I got a kick out of your skijoring picture „on the latest class birthday card. I thought for a minute that I was in the picture, But my race was in the opposite direction."
One dependable correspondent in earlier years was Doc Milliken. He explains his lapse in recent years as follows: "This has been a year of ambulances and hospitals. It was indeed welcome news when my surgeon recently said 'Come back in three months.' I enjoyed the skijoring on the last class birthday card. It really looked as if it was taken almost 80 years ago."
From Columbus, Ohio, Hank Orth had this to say: "I am as well as any of us, I guess no serious ailments. I live in a nice retirement community called Friendship Village. My daughter lives only a few miles away and I see her often."
We have one death to report this month: having only recently received a notice from Hanover that Russell G. Weston, died May 15, 1988.
Here's hoping that we will see you at the fall reunion on September 14—16.
