"The hill winds know their name:" Charles Denny, Frank Headley, Hal Hirsch, and Bob Lyle.
However many unsung heroes we have, we rejoice in the doings of those we know about. Hal envisioned a new field and, over the doubts of his elders, created his outstanding White Stag line of athletic clothing. "Who's Who" lists the many services he gave his life to for the good of his fellow man. We can all take pride that he is one of us.
Bob Lyle gets a column in "Who's Who" to tell of his inspiring leadership in secondary education. One of his old students told me, "If I had a major problem in my life today, I'd want to talk with Bob Lyle."
A wah-hoo-wah to Dick Black for winning the Green Derby in the 1990 Alumni Fund. Some of us helped him, but Dick's loyalty to Dartmouth and his persistence are the secret.
Gus and Mary Wiedenmayer are off to Germany after Mary had a successful operation at Mary Hitchcock.
Stan Davis '30 and I spent a heart warming hour recently with a '91. He smiles at the thought that we could have any greater love and appreciation of Dartmouth than he and his classmates cherish. To most of his classmates the noisy fringe who distort the scene seem negligible. What a refreshing change from those who quote the deplorable distortions of the Wall Streert Journal as their picture of Dartmouth.
John Dickey's health is unchanged, but librarian emeritus Ed Lathem's "The Dartmouth Experience," a compilation of John's convocation and valedictory addresses, brings John's wisdom and presence forever before us.
I work to restore loyalty and joy to all our Dartmouth fellowship. John says, "True loyalty only comes into play .... when all is not or may not be well." He deplores "... the attitude within a man which leads him to the verge of disloyalty or actually into it simply because all things at all times are not perfect in all of America."
Re: "Men of Dartmouth": When you cater to the dreamers, And give in to all the screamers, You've already one foot on the downward path.
And from all the recent data On our dear old Alma Mater, We've about thrown out the baby with the bath.
