Aside from being in Modesto, this month finds your class secretary in heaven. Trip Dorkey has written with enough news to make this job a dream come true. So without further ado (and only the barest of editorial effort on my part):

"As you seem starved for information, I can tell you that I am a lawyer in New York, the head of the litigation group for Richards & O'Neil, and a member of our executive committee. I am married to Phyllis Johnson and we have three children, two boys and a girl: Case 13, John 8, and Molly 6. We live in Brooklyn Heights during the year, and in the summer we see Denny Brown and Ann Marie Valotti and their two children Joseph and Laura, because they have a house near our place in Rockport, Maine.

We all follow Jock McKernan from the front porch up there and think he has done a great job as governor of Maine. He now faces a difficult job for reelection, with the value of incumbency somewhat diminished by virtue of having an opponent who preceded him as governor. McKernan (R) has generally out-Democrated the Democrats when it comes to the environment and social issues. Still, it's hard to avoid blame in some people's minds for a souring economy across all of New England.

"Around New York the lawyers I speak with include Stewart Rosenblum, who does trust and estates at Debevoise & Plimpton, and Dick Sammis, who does corporate work at Willkie Farr & Gallagher. Both of their offices are literally across different streets from me. I also keep up with Tim Russell, who practices law in Washington, D.C., and Ernie Babcock, who has his own firm in Portland, Maine.

"Recently, I was able to retain on behalf of one of my clients Steve Buxbaum, who practices in the Houston law firm of Sheinfield Maley & Kay. I got to meet him in New York and catch-up on old times. He is doing super.

"At least once a year, I see Jeff Dahlman who is the general counsel of a hightech company in New Jersey because he hosts a Kentucky Derby Day party. Chip Sharkey, who works for Connecticut General Life Insurance Company in Hartford, also regularly attends that party.

"As you may know, Lou Maranzana is the head football coach at Bucknell University and engineered Bucknell's victory over Dartmouth last season. A bunch of us had a small reunion at that game and were able to celebrate Lou's victory. Those who attended were Bob Mlarkar, Pete Donovan, Jack Wimsatt, Steve Meyer, Tom Kenworthy, Joe Daly '71, and Marty Cain '72. Bob runs a business in Cleveland, Pete is an architect in Washington, D.C., Jack is a major executive at Bell Atlantic, Steve is a lawyer in his home town of Chariton, lowa, and Tom is a partner in Morgan, Lewis & Bockius in Philadelphia.

"My practice takes me to England from time to time, and when I am there I invariably watch TV-AM, one of the English breakfast programs. Paul Gambaccini is on the air and handles movie reviews. He is a major contributor to the literature on both movies and rock music.

"I do my part with Jack Pansegrau's fantastic fundraising efforts for our class, and you should also know that I am on the committee in charge of getting our 20th Reunion organized, which is pretty impressive for a class that is not particularly organized. We hope for an impressive turnout next June 14-15 and solicit volunteers in the meantime."

Thanks, Trip a job too well done. As is often the case in such an event, you may count on my full support as a candidate to follow me as our class secretary.
