Barely two weeks since I wrote the October column, and no news is good news or is it? Well, not to a class secretary, but I've a bottomless well of useless knowledge which I'm happy to share with you.

Milt and I both missed last April's C.O.W. for ample reasons. The May Thirtyteer gave you a brief report provided by Ted Wolf. Through my spies, who are everywhere, I can add that a hot topic at the meeting of the Class Secretaries Association was the culling of "uninteresteds" from the DAM subscriber lists, as had been authorized on a class-by-class basis by the Alumni Council. The secretaries voted against it except as a last resort, pointing out that the Mag's overhead wouldn't be reduced, that reduced circulation could result in lost advertising revenues, and that no one could predict when a disaffected alum might return to the flock.

I've mentioned occasionally a built-in two-month lag between my, or GarvenDalglish's, submission of copy and your receipt of the Mag. Some of you have mentioned an even longer delay in the publication of obituaries, due admittedly to lack of space. The consensus of the secretaries was that the Mag's reporting of deaths should not be drastically curtailed: the obit backlog should be "managed," with a target length of 200 words replacing the old limit of 300.

No such problems kept our Mag from winning three awards from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education: a gold in the college magazine category; a gold for staff writing; and a silver for the February feature "Dino Wars," by Sports Illustrated writer Bob Sullivan '75. Congratulations to Jay Heinrichs and staff including Bob Nutt '49, now stepping down as alumni news editor, and his replacement, Heather Killebrew '89.

Mt. Morris, Ill., the McInneses' new home, is remarkable. It's six miles west of Oregon, 30 miles north of Ohio, 50 miles north of Wyoming, and 80 miles from Nevada. You don't believe me? Look it up!
