Random thoughts as we close out the eighties: In October the Dartmouth Club of Cape Cod sponsored a golf tournament at the Cummaquid Golf Club, hosted by Chan Stevens '43. Some 24 Dartmouth guys and dolls swung, chipped, and putted up a storm but I, sole representative for the class of '36, even with Chan's mysterious handicapping and scoring, didn't bring our class any honors. (June upheld the distaff side for '36.) Time for a new secretary!
Following my earlier report, Dean Nicholson did finish well in his class in the Falmouth Road Race last spring. He liked it so much in spite of the crowded field (some 6,000) that he made an encore in the Falmouth-In-The-Fall event which he said was much more cozy with only about some 800 entrants.
A recent note from the Alumni Fund in Hanover reports that Clay Mellor had received the Chairman's Citation for out standing service on behalf of the 1989 Fund. The class extends to you Clay our proud congratulations.
Tom and Jean Parker spent a busy weekend with Ross and Nancy Martindale early in November and went on to a spontaneous mini-reunion at Ed and HelenHigbee's on Barter's Island nearby Boothbay Harbor, Maine, along with Brad andKay Chase, Pete Fitzherbert, Dede Foster,Phyllis England, and Dave Macomber.
From the classes of '24 through '68 came some 25 answers to last month's bridge problem (six from '36). Russ Hurd was most concise: "It's a dummy reversal. Take the ace of clubs, discarding the diamond 7. Lead a heart to the jack, and trump the 2 of spades. Lead another heart to the queen and trump the queen of spades. Lead another heart to the king, then play the ace of hearts, pitching the ace of diamonds, next the ace of spades, pitching the king of diamonds, then all the rest of North's diamonds are good." Thanks one and all for your participation.
