It has been over 30 years since we were all together at Dartmouth, yet the mail indicates that the school spirit that was evident back then is alive and well! Five classmates expressed their concerns about developments at the College, which concerns are grouped below in the interest of continuity. Their more general comments appear in the last paragraph below.

Bob Bartholomew "misses the Indian symbol (not the mascot)" and "deeply regrets the divisiveness (at the College) of the last several years."Cary Stiff, whose daughter is a freshman at Dartmouth, says: "Sounds like an interesting time to be at Dartmouth. Seems like the College is in ferment. In our day it was more a case of being fermented." [Ed. note: Come now, Cary. I'm sure you "cracked" a book once in a while back then, didn't you?] JoeLaVigna "... supports the [Dartmouth] Review's complaints against the [College] administration, and is willing to tolerate tasteless diatribe." Mike Kistler says: "Al though I made several calls and wrote several letters to the presidents of both Dartmouth and the alumni association, I have received no substantive reply, and regardless of the 'facts' surrounding the Dart- mouth Review, etc., Dartmouth received nationwide negative publicity and there has been no effective response from the administration." Ed Hobbie feels that he speaks "probably for many '59s" when he writes: "Some of us have backed off from our earlier enthusiasm for Dartmouth, for any of a number of reasons, among them the adverse publicity and seeming disregard for grassroots alumni concerns (except at Alumni Fund time). It is probably a safe bet that the decline in alumni giving is a vote cast by many of the 'silent majority.' "

Other comments made by these gents were as follows. Bob, who is director of the LA County STD program, notes that son Rex graduated from U.C. Irvine and son Lee attends college in Long Beach while working fall time. Cary notes that daughter Katie is a'93, which he says pleases him and Katie's uncle Dave '53, and would have pleased Katie's late grandfather '27. Katie's older sister, also accepted at Dartmouth, accepted a scholarship at Colorado College. Joe, who has survived eight years in his own real estate and investment banking service since relocating to the West Coast, can appreciate the cartoon he keeps, featuring two street venders. Vendor #1 asks vender #2 how he likes being his own boss. Vender #2 replies "Great! It's being my own employee that I don't like." Mike, a '6O Tuck Thayer grad who, after having taken a good look at the corporate world decided to go into medicine, practiced radiology for 15 years. Last year he and wife Ginny moved to California. He writes from Oxnard (near LA) that he has set up a new practice and will now concentrate on the subspecialty of neuroradiology and MRI. And Ed combines being a judge of the municipal court in Westfield, N.J., where he lives, with practicing law in nearby Cranfield, where he went to high school.
