1927 was saddened at the February 10 death of Gertrude Choukas after a short illness. She was the widow of former classmate Michael Choukas and the mother of Michael Choukas Jr. '51, director of Alumni Affairs at Dartmouth.
A recent article in the local weekly paper of Weston, Mass., was headed "About People" and read: "Paul Hannah was guest of honor at the annual dinner party for officers of the Federal Savings Bank. He was presented with a silver tray in recognition of his recent election as director emeritus."
In appreciating his most recent class birthday card, Gordon Hope wrote from Redington Beach, Fla.: "I can't believe that I finally and safely made it to 85. I am well and keep active by riding my bike. Have two great-grandchildren in Ipswich, Mass. Maybe they will turn out to be clam diggers. Who knows?"
Johnny Machem also appreciated getting his annual card. In writing from Towson, Md., he mentioned seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild, aged 4.
We especially like letters from long-silent classmates. The most recent such was from Bill Chapman, Light House Point, Fla. who wrote "Hi Charlie: Sure did appreciate your birthday card greetings. Would have answered sooner but have been laid up with the flu and am now readying for a prostate operation."
A note from Ros Guyot from Pasadena, Calif., says: "Jean and I have enjoyed Villa Gardens for the past three years and are both in pretty good shape. We would like to make the trip to Hanover for reunion time but doubt that we will make it. Our best wishes to all of our classmates."
Chuck Carroll, Fort Collins, Colo., commented on the skiing picture on our latest class birthday card by saying: "As to things like skiing, too much arthritis and too little sense of balance for me, but I do golf, bowl, and fish—but only in lakes, none of the fancy fly fishing as in the old days."
In New York City, Fen Tung is in good health, although a little weaker physically each year. The big event of 1989 was the birth of a daughter to the wife of his only son.
The following classmates have now completed their careers: Berle E. Brush on january 15, George J. Kish on january 23, and Hargreaves Heap on january 30. And our parting admonition to you: "Please keep healthy."
