Dear Class of the Year Mates, no need to recount for you the award presented to 1953 on Class Officers Weekend citing our record-breaking reunion giving, reunion attendance, class activities and projects, etc. I mention it for the other envious alumni who might peek at our column. Here on the weekend were DickFleming, Don Smith, Tom Bloomer,Jack Newton (fully recovered from recent surgery), Paul Paganucci, Bob Henderson (who was on the program), MarthaStiles, Elsa Luker, the Gosses, Cahns,Siegals, Lazars, Zimmermans, and I. Several weeks later, Tony Frank and FredWhittemore were here for the Tuck Overseers meeting and the groundbreaking for the big new Byrne Center at Tuck. Tony was also the speaker for the Dartmouth Club of the Upper Valley.
Good news for D '53 traffic (and other) violators in N.H. Tell the cops you'll fight that ticket right up to the Supreme Court. There you'll find sympathy not only from Bill Johnson, who's been there a dozen years, but also Sherm Horton, who has just been nominated by Governor Gregg for a ten-year term. But when does he retire?
In Paris a few weeks ago, I picked up the Herald Tribune in which there's a big section on advertising in the new Europe. The feature article is on Dave Florence, director of European operations and senior vice president of Kobs and Draft, the direct marketing arm of BSB ad agency. Dave still lives in Greenwich, Conn., and remains president of Direct Media of Port Chester, N.Y. Imagine trying to sleep on the way over, waking up and seeing Jack Patten on the screen selling you Business Week!
Our mid New York State group now has Tom and Arlene Bloomer comfortably ensconced in their lovely new house on Lake Skaneateles. Tom is doing consulting at the Episcopal Diocese and at the Cornell Business School. Bill Hutchens, who lives nearby, retired as managing partner of Price Waterhouse in Syracuse in '87, but is active on several boards and pursues his interest in North American big game hunting. The trophy room is filled with bear, elk, cougar, and sheep. If he can get a desert ram, he'll have a grand slam of the four North American sheep. In Binghamton, Paul Dillingham just retired from IBM and is getting licenses as a certified financial planner and in securities brokerage. Jack Koerner still tends the Ford agency in Syracuse.
Kisuk Cheung, chief of the engineering division of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Pacific Region, was the speaker at the Thayer School investiture ceremonies and received the Robert Fletcher award, the highest honor given by Thayer.
I left out Andrew Williams, son of Jack (deceased) and Lisa Williams in my roster of sons and daughters of '53 graduating in June. Congratulations, Andrew, and all the '53 graduates.
