Last year at this time, many of us were down in Harbour Ridge, including Bill Gilges and Tom Trager, who were so taken with that class event that it gave them an idea for another one—a '53 Wunderbar Winter Carnival in the spring of '94 in Crested Butte, Colo. Bill writes that in 36 years with the Kansas City Ski Club he's run 35 ski trips to Colorado, including five to Crested Butte. He says the skiing, services, and accommodations are great, and it's less crowded and more pristine than the bigger resorts and only a half hour from the Gunnison Airport. There are direct flights from Philly, Atlanta, Chicago, and Denver. Bill can also get us excellent rates. I'll add that Pete Bridges has a vacation home there and loves it. Bill may be our most seasoned traveler; he just returned from a birding expedition to Costa Rica.
From the Kingswood-Oxford School in West Hartford, Conn., comes word that AlCollins has been named chairman of the board of trustees. He's been a trustee since 1986, treasurer since 1990, and all four children graduated from Kingswood. Al finished his term on the Alumni Council and now chairs the Dartmouth College Relations Group (DCRG) which promotes interaction between alumni and the Trustees.
Ron Scheman says my Class Notes report on him was about right, but I missed one important thing. He just got married! Upon reaching 60, Ron has a new venture in Russia, new law firm in D.C., and a new wife, Lynn Cutler, who is vice chair of the Democratic Party. They have eight children between them. At the wedding in May were Bob Malin,George Sarner, Dick Schroeder, Jerry Goldstein '54, Dave Mandelbaum '54, and Dave Schwartz '52.
A grand event was the Whittemore family's engagement party for son Larry at the River Club in New York the week before Christmas. Larry is graduating from Tuck in June. Several of you filled me in on the details, which included singers and dancers—perhaps from Fred's current or prior theatrical productions. On the scene were the Callenders,Corcorans, Gus Aliens, Malins,Paganuccis, Elena Kingsland, and others.
Our great leader, Don Goss, informs me that the former presidents on our nominating committee—Pag, Simpson, Stephens,Blum, and others—haven't received the flood of class officer nominations we expected. We have slots open.
On a sad note, many of us attended John Kemeny's memorial service at Rollins Chapel in early January. It was beautifully and solemnly done with a spirit of celebration conveyed so well by his son and daughter and other speakers. His brilliance and sound judgement lived in harmony with his deep humanity and desire to help others. He loved teaching until the day he died. Al Collins, Fred Whittemore, Bernie Sudikof, Pag, Don Goss, Bob Henderson, Bill Johnson, and Don Smith were there.
Not many months to go until the 40th! Make your plans and let us know you're coming.
