Harbour Ridge, Stuart, Fla. We have just finished the great '53 mini-reunion ("seminar," for those claiming a tax deduction) at this elegant and meticulously planned development of John Dodge's.
Our hosts, Bob Simpson, Gus Allen, BobMalin, and John Dodge went to great lengths to make this an event to be remembered . . . one that demanded coverage by both your secretary and Newsletter Editor Norm Carpenter. We counted 53 '53s, and more may turn up. They came from all over:
The Phil Beekmans, Bob Callenders, Howie Clerys, John Dodges, Dave Hallorans, Bob Malins, Howie Pitts, Ken Robinsons, Bob Simpsons, Bill Vitalises, and Jack Zimmermans have places here and took in some of the rest of us.
From the frozen Northeast came the Gus Aliens, Tom Bloomers, Father Ed Boyle, Charlie Buchanans, Al Collinses, Dick Dunham, Dick Fleming, Karl Friedmanns, Don Gosses, Fran L'Esperances, Dave Replogles, Hilty Rosens, Don Smith, Woody Spurgeon, Pete Wagner, Fred Whittemore, Dick Greene, and Dick Thomas.
From the Midwest came the Dick Blums, Norm Carpenters, Larry Lewises, Dick Lowenthals, and Tom Tragers.
From other places in Florida we had the Jim Cartmells, Jim Courtney, John Dickasons, Emil Schnells, Ed Fowlers, Bob Fosters, Tim Reeds, Denny Speidels, Nick Hagoorts, Jim Wests, and Graf Sieber. The Tony Franks and Tommy Thomases were here from Washington, and the Dave Salters flew in on Dave's plane from Eleuthra. The Bill Gilgeses came from Kansas City.
We got off to a fast start on Friday morning, January 17, with Bob Malin's armada (including his own boat and those of Denny Spiedel, Jim Wells '43, and Jack Koeniger '46) carting 55 of us "boat people" down the St. Lucie River to the Inland Waterway and lunch at the Pirate's Cove. We had drinks and dinner at the Lakeside Club by the tennis courts. Bob Malin was emcee, and there were words from President Goss, Fred Whittemore, and the outgoing (but not retiring) Postmaster General Tony Frank, who in a solid term of four years has put his positive stamp on the U.S.P.S.
We started Saturday with a class meeting that concluded with "Men of Dartmouth," which the entire clubhouse staff seems to know by heart. After the day's activities we had drinks and a superb dinner by the pool at John and Lore Dodge's magnificent new home right on the St. Lucie River. Father Boyle conducted Mass on Sunday, with the Protestants outnumbering the regulars. After the New "fork Times and full activity by Malin's Navy it was on to. the golf courses (there are two 18-holers), where Bloomer threw aside his cane and played 18 with his new hip. We gathered for cocktails at Bob and Anne Simpson's beautiful new house—it's really a museum, with so many of their exquisite artifacts from around the world.
The weather was great right up to Monday, when most of us left. It was great to see so many of our classmates outside the Northeast and to live for a few days in this nature preserve (with amenities) of Harbour Ridge.
