By now you must all know that Bob Davidson died of pneumonia on August 26. It struck fast, and apparently within ten days after contracting the disease he was gone. Chances are you also know that PeterCardozo, 6-C Dickel Road, Scarsdale, NY 10583, has agreed to take over Bob's chores as editor of Thirty Nine Out. We welcome Peter to the list of class officers and as a member of the Executive Committee.

More bad news is the August 8 death of Earle Seeley after a long bout with cancer. Both Earle's and Bob's obits will appear in a later issue.

At the request of the rector of The Church of the Good Shepherd in Cashiers, N.C., this spring Hank Conkle delivered a 30 minute talk about his experiences over the 30 years in which he has been responsible for this local Episcopal church. The Cashiers Printing and Graphics company worked Hank's remarks into an attractive booklet, and we were the recipients of a copy. Should you be interested in a copy, one may be procured by mailing a $5.00 check to the printing company at P.O. Box 550, Cashiers, NC 28717-0550. The proceeds go to the Henry Conkle Scholarship Fund which helps enable promising students from the Cashiers-Glenville area to attend college.

We know that Freddie Upton is in fine fettle, having recently passed along to us a funny article recounting the travels and tribulations of a fictitious Yalie reported from time to time in the Yale Alumni Magazine class of '43 notes. It kind of reminds me of that classmate of ours who kept sending postcards to Bob Davidson from remote spots around the world.

I don't know if you noticed the small piece in this magazine a few months back which noted that the DAM won Newsweek's Sibley Award for 1991 as the best periodical in higher education. Kind of makes you feel good to have such favorable press after the rather discouraging news stories in the press that seem to develop about the College from time to time.

Our basket of news has been very thin during the summer months, so we shall be forced to close this column on the short side. We trust, however, that you guys will make a special effort to support your new newsletter editor, and incidentally fill up my basket, by sending in your latest on the green cards that are tucked in with Thirty-Nine Out. Even though they are all addressed to me, I shall be sending the bulk of them on to Peter.
