Dartmouth is beginning a five-year campaign to raise a few zillion extra dollars ($425 million, actually). The campaign theme is "The Will to Excel," and not surprisingly three '44s, John Berry,Monte Duval, and Greg Rabassa, will be among a top-drawer list of alumni honored at a New York City Lincoln Center gala, November 15-16. John, Monte, and Greg will be awarded the Presidential Medal for Outstanding Achievement and Leadership. Stay tuned for lots more about the campaign in the months to come.

Incidentally, John Berry was also honored last April as Class Bequest Chairman of the Year.

And while we're passing out the garlands, a large van-load goes to Walter Burke, for whom the new chemistry building, Burke Hall, is named. A longtime benefactor of sciences at the College, Walter was also a Dartmouth trustee for ten years and chairman of the board for five.

Nice talk with Bob Kaatz in Edina, Minn. An engineer, Bob retired a half dozen years ago and then dawdled with a couple of small engineering firms of his own making. He says he's now happy "just smelling the roses" and logging time with his and Pat's grandchildren, all five of them. Bob is proud of his three Hanover degrees—Dartmouth B.A., Tuck "M.B.A., and Thayer M.S.—but at this stage he's just pleased with his garden.

Ad man and writer Ed Bailey and wife Nancy have got their retirement feet up down there in Jekyll Island, Ga., and at this writing (mid-September), they are sweating out the trials of the Atlanta Braves in the National League pennant race. Longtime residents of Quebec, the Baileys are avid baseball fans, and every year they head for Florida and spring training—a double header in all aspects, as they root for both the Braves and the Montreal Expos, and they have a house on Jekyll Island and a condo in West Palm Beach.

Livin' is easy these days, too, for Fred andphyl Kennedy in Bedford, Mass. Fred retired from banking nine years ago at age 60, and has been leading "the happy, quiet life" ever since. They don't stray far from home-they've added a room to their house, and Fred plays golf three times a week. His handicap is 18 and "not getting any better."

John "Blue Duck" Eaton lives in an old captain's house on an historic street in Vineyard Haven on Martha's Vineyard, with his retired brother Fred '40 within walking distance. Blue keeps busy with marketing projects and hiring himself out as a "four-hour-worker," filling in for people who need a brief time off for whatever reason.

Last August's Alumni College in Hanover had an environmental theme, "Watching the Earth," and among those watching were DonDunbar, from Nova Scotia, the late GeorgeDyke's widow, Gladys, from Greenville, S.C., and Eric Barradale, from Guilford, Vt. Eric said it was a "fantastic" experience.

One death to report: Dr. John "Red"O'Connor died September 3 at his home in Essex, Md. Our sympathy to his wife, Jean. That's it. Blessings.
