Good mail bag of aged news written in September for November publication. From beautiful La Jolla Calif., Bob Cate writes, "Please tell George (Barr) that I was also an OSS cryptographer—mostly in Det. 101 in CBI Theater, including six months 'behind the lines,' and two in New Delhi, six in Nazira, Assam, and the rest of the two years at Intermediate points. Fascinating memories! Including a ten-day hike (through China in part)—just like the DOC." Wow; memories indeed.
Another of the California gang, GeneWilkin, "finally made it back (from reunion) after 8,452 miles in the RV and two months touring America. Thrilled seeing three Frank Lloyd Wright structures in Madison, Wise. Mt. Rushmore looked smaller than expected. Learned to live (happily) in close quarters; more age—less demands. A joy to see Sandoes,Jordans, Rowans, Barrs, etc., at Reunion. Perhaps not in name, but Hanover shines as a 'University' after that 35 years absence. Sold house. Renting. Uneven times." Gene's new address: R.O. box2500, Atascadero, CA 93423. Thanks for your report, Gene; interesting thoughts, as always.
At 5:00 p.m. on a Monday in August, John Leggat wrote by candle light—there being no power after Hurricane Bob brushed Westford, Mass.—that Ruth had called to advise of a mandatory evacuation of Drake's Island, Maine, where she was at their summer place. He enclosed a copy of a Boston Globe correspondent's account of his daughter's wedding, featuring Joe and Shirl Michael. Joe performed the ceremony in a bucolic setting. John commented he didn't know Joe was a "marrying justice." If it's the same guy who runs our class auction, John, I guess it's anything for a buck.
How about this for "'round the girdled Earth?" After attending the 3rd round of the U.S. Open at Hazeltine John Washburn flew Iceland Air to Luxembourg (and Iceland?) the following Monday, with return one week later after June 21-22 participation in the Arctic Open's 36-hole competition on the Arctic Circle Akureyri 18-hole golf course. Quaffing Viking beer from the fourth hole on failed to lift his game to Payne Stewart level; it had the opposite effect. However, a good time was had by all 140-plus men and women entries, including the U.S. ambassador, John relates. Iceland TV channel No. 1 interviewed him near the 18th green; luckily he departed Keflavik Airport before it was aired on June 25. Good dispatch, John. Write again when you get to Moscow.
Bill Riley (William H.) claims the college has ignored his change of address, and asked for our help. We did send it on, but for all his classmates, it's RD #2, Box 208, Thompson, PA 18465. Hope between Dartmouth and the U.S. Mule, they get it straight for you, Bill.
Thought for the month: "History teaches us to make the same mistakes with a sense of tradition."
A happy Thanksgiving to all. Please write your scribe.
