Sorry for not having a column last month no news from our classmates. The same this month, but your class scribe has taken it upon himself to seek out some classmates who have forsaken the business world, its stresses and materialism (which we all get tied up in), and who have contributed to the scope of knowledge and resolution of important world problems. This month the spotlight is on John Topping.
John is living and working in Washington, D.C., as president of Climate Institute, a nonprofit organization which is engaged in advancing knowledge and assisting in implementation of worldwide treaties (such as the Montreal protocol) dealing with environmental and climate problems like the deteriorating ozone layer. The organization has among its board of directors some of the world's top scientists and conducts briefing of the world's top government officials on these important issues. About two years ago, John and the Institute ran a world conference on these issues in Cairo, Egypt, with representatives of 40 countries attending. Since that conference the organization was designated by the United Nations Environmental Program to provide governmental briefings worldwide extending to 30 countries or more.
John's position just this year has taken him to Rumania, England, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, and Mexico (where he spoke directly to the president), and he is about to leave on a trip which will take him to Indonesia, .Malaysia, Thailand, and perhaps Brazil. John truly loves his work and the experiences which the organization has brought to him and his family (including a week vacation in Egypt following the world conference, sailing down the Nile and exploring the pyramids and other antiquities).
John's wife, Linda, is an attorney at the State Department, also providing public service. They and their three children, John, Elizabeth, and Alex, ages ranging from 9 to 14, are flourishing in the stimulating environment of
Next month the spotlight turns to archaeologist Bill Fitzhugh. I look forward to hearing from more of you, so that we can stay in touch with how each of our classmates has lived his life in a meaningful way from which we all can learn.
