MARSHALLING THE FACTS. Knowing the difficulty of ferreting out news from leery or weary classmates, generous Dan Mar shall was kind enough to direct a month's worth of green postcards to this column. You'll find green card items scattered throughout.
ALL ABOUT BUFFS. Herewith in its entirety is the content of one such card: "Tennis buffs, golf buffs—are there any ski buffs?" This forlorn, bitter, empathetic, questioning (choose one) missive was unsigned. Ha! For one versed in mystery and suspense genres, such anonymity was simple to penetrate. Since the card was postmarked in a city in which there is but one '38er, the writer's identity is known. Because of his obvious desire for privacy, he shall remain nameless. However, he issued a legitimate challenge: Are there any ski buffs? If so, slide forward (if you're not on crutches) and set the gentleman's mind at ease. Anonymous contributions accepted.
FORSAKING ALL OTHERS. 'Tis true: Love conquers all, including the years.Documentation? The virtual rash of 50th wedding anniversaries breaking out all over. In recent months, Bob and Claire Reeves spanned the ocean in company with Johnny and CarolJohnson to celebrate I-do Day; Bob and LoisDeery were given a bash by family and friends, including Bob and Mary Helen Hallock, in Quechee, Vt.; and Sandy and Jenot Mills recaptured the rapture in Hawaii.
WITH A CLICK OF HER HEELS, Dorothy will be returning this Spring. To Hanover, not Kansas. Bob Carroll's lovely widow will make the trek, her first in years, to attend the graduation of grandson Gregg Lemkau, the Big Green's sterling soccer goalie.
Never to be forgotten is the warm hospitality Bob accorded a surface ship sailor who dropped in at the sub base in Perth, West Australia, way back when.
ATOUCH OF NOSTALGIA The theme of this month's Magazine is "unbashed nostalgia." In counterpoint, here is a bashed bit of same. Remember the English language? Where, oh, where has it gone. A bulletin, from a department of the College, no less, offered the following helpful advice: "When you're done transmitting (a fax), you can... et cetera." Done transmitting? Alas, Virginia, there is no sanity clause.
MEA CULPA. George Nichols, si. George Nicholes, no. The latter is how George's name appeared in a recent column. Easy as it would be to try to make it they a culpa, 'tain't so. The fault, dear Brutus, etc.
After 32 years in Pelham, N.Y., George and Fran wound up in Chatham ("a great place to be"), Mass., in 1987. Their Dartmouth sons, Douglas '67 and Larry '76, thoroughly approve of the move. They probably would even if Dad were George Nicholes.
CLASSIC CRUISE. "Spectacular!" was the operative word for John and Tex Meacham in describing their experience on a Dartmouth-sponsored cruise to the Aegean Islands. Between the crusin', schmoozin', and snoozin' the Meachams and fellow voyagers Bob and Phyllis Pollock were schooled in Aegean history and civilization by "great profs giving excellent lectures," while "wonderfully congenial cruise mates made it sheer pleasure."
