NICE TOUCH. A kinder, gentler spin to a class news item was provided by Dick Holt. In addition to sending along a clipping from The New York Times reporting the recent appointment of the former president and CEO of Lord & Taylor to the presidency of the Austin, Tex., fashion specialty chain bearing the proud name "Scarbrough's" (the long-time domain of Jack Scarbrough a former firm president himself and family), Dick supplied a taste of nostalgia: Earlier in the year he and Evelyn dined with Dottie Carroll, widow of career U.S. Navy captain Doug Carroll, who far too early (1960) crossed the final bar while stationed in England. To Dottie fell the duty and delight of raising their five children, obviously a mission well-performed. The hungry Holts also lunched with John Merrill's widow, SueMerrill Terry.

Dick, Bob, John, and Mouse Hallett all roomed together in Wheeler. Dick is the sole survivor and the keeper of the flame of memory of that great group.

KANSAS CYCLONE. For a guy who maintains that all he has been doing is getting ready for winter, Jake Carey comes across as a whirlwind of vim and vitality. Refreshing. Jake keeps in touch with Bob Reno. Jake also continues to use the class's favorite four-letter word—"golf." No surprise, since Jake is an erstwhile executive member of the U.S. Golf Association.

GOOD TREK. Whither famed erolorers Lewis and Clark went, thither Jack Slattery. Slats recendy returned from Victoria, Canada, having cruised the Columbia River following the route of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The tour was under the auspices of the Audubon Society.

Also recendy Jack lunched with the peripatetic Pat Gorman (who is perpetually popping up globally, it seems) and '39er Leonard Vine. Jack is in the best of spirits and enjoying good health. Who could ask for more?

SHORT PAUSE for quondam NBC announcer Jack Bowles to play catch-up. Jack, a one-year student at Dartmouth, recalls that, returning to Hanover for our 40th Reunion, his initial feeling of isolation was completely dispelled by a royal bear hug delivered by a real Baron. The latter, of course, was Carl vonPechmann.

Ever the sawy trader, Jack has swapped a used knee for a newer model and, if not exacdy walking on air, is walking tall. He reports being in touch with Dick Clarke of the Sun City, Ariz., Clarkes.

QUICK TAKES. Back in 1981 BarrieMclntire retired from the practice of medicine, but not from his two main hobbies: fishing and woodworking. He's just completed an 8'x12' shed on the grounds of his cottage. Barrie sees fellow MD Phil Thompson, who is still practicing in Portland.

Carl Boothroyd, still living high above Cayuga's waters, is enjoying "routine retirement," which in his case means community service and a virtual decathalon of sports.

Fran Schildgen scoots regularly from his Vermont home to football games in Hanover. He also hears from Karl Seideiistuecker de temps en temps, as certain would-be bi-linguists are wont to say.
