We're overdue in advising you of the formation of the Upper Valley's premier new law firm, Teachout, Brooks, Moore & McNally, in Norwich. The firm emerged last year from the reorganized remains of Brownell & Moeser, and demonstrated eminent good sense by including Gary Brooks on their masthead this time around. Gary had been waiting in the wings as an undercelebrated partner going back at least to the Carter Administration, so it is high time he enjoyed broader exposure. I cannot too highly recommend Gary for all your Vermont and New Hampshire legal needs, since I've known him not only as a Dartmouth roommate but also as a paying client (yes, the price was right).
Nowadays Gary has a far lovelier roommate (and spouse), Barbara Duncan. Barbara builds row houses for the family. It seems the two recently decided the kids should go to Hanover/Norwich schools, but then realized they had carelessly located their house on the Thetford side of their large backwoods lot. This was no problem for Barbara who simply designed and (personally) built a new house 100 feet away on the Norwich side. The Thetford house and pond are now for sale. Gary always did have a knack for timing the ups and downs of residential real estate.
Insofar as timing and gracious New England living are concerned, it's hard to be sure if Davis Young's latest achievement puts him exactly where he wishes he were just now. Davis was recently named a director in the Bank of Boston's Securities Division just in time for the region's banking fireworks show. He is supposed to handle mergers and acquisitions, no mean task when the banking acquisition business in that part of the world seems to be pretty well dominated by federal agencies. In any event, Davis should know the ropes, since he joined the bank way back in 1971 and worked his way up through various marketing management departments. He's also active in numerous professional banking organizations, the United Way of Massachusetts Bay, and the endowment management board for the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts. Davis lives in Newton, where his wife, Bashi, and son Thomas do their best every night to soothe dad's banking jitters.
Steve Straus is doing his best to minimize New England's misery by practicing painless dentistry out of Holbrook, Mass. Steve received his D.M.D. from the Tufts School of Dentistry in 1975 and journeyed back to Boston in October so the American Endodontic Society could name him a fellow at their annual meeting. Otherwise Steve stays closer to the South Shore and is available there through the bureau of the Massachusetts Dental Society to convince your group that simplified root canal therapy can be fun. Just ask wife Roberta and offspring Matthew 17 and Emily 15 if they'd let dad try it on them.
In closing I want to thank all who wrote with condolences following national media reports on the recent ban on weekend cruising in Modesto. It has been tough, but our city fathers were not totally heartless: the annual Graffiti Night, featuring four miles of bumper- to-bumper hot rods will still be held this year on June 15. The date happens to conflict with our 20th Reunion in Hanover, June 14—16, but I sense that most of you have your priorities pretty well in order. Those going to Hanover should get their reservations in soon; others should contact me for all the exciting details. See everyone in June then, one way or another.
