70 Kevin M. Cunningham died April 9 at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital following an extensive battle with cancer. Those of us who knew Kevin will remember him for his spirited enthusiasm, boundless energy, and widely varied interests. Kevin was born in Fitchburg, Mass., and raised in Hanover. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy before entering Dartmouth. As an undergraduate, Kevin was an amateur ski instructor for the DOC Ski School and was not satisfied until he became a certified professional instructor and technical perfectionist.
These pursuits led to teaching assignments at ski schools ranging from the Dartmouth Skiway and Stratton Mountain to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and Portillo, Chile. Kevin was also an accomplished photographer, and pictures from his travels have been published in several magazines. Another interest which Kevin honed as an undergraduate was wood- working. One of his contributions in this area was the mahogany bar at Zeta Psi. Kevin went on to Tuck School and, after obtaining his M.B.A., began work at Computac Inc., a West Lebanon-based supplier of data processing software to magazine distributors and bookstores. As president of Computac Inc., Kevin helped make company a nationally recognized leader in these areas.
In addition to his business career, Kevin also developed a tireless interest in farming and breeding livestock, keeping cattle, horses, and sheep on his farm in Etna. His love of woodworking and craftsmanship was manifested in his home and outbuildings, much of which he built himself.
Kevin also found time to give back some of his good fortune. He served as the class of 1970's first class agent for several years. In recent years, Kevin enjoyed working with future ski racers through the Ford Sayre ski program. He also served as chairman of the Upper Valley Youth Services, a Lebanon-based organization which supports troubled children and their families, and in doing so he devoted countless hours to improving the lives of children less fortunate than his own.
Kevin's outlook was perhaps best summed up by three wooden letters which he fashioned at the Hopkins Center and displayed prominently in his dormitory room and later in his home. The letters spielled "Yes," the symbolic affirmation of life which he took from a favorite book, Ulysses. Kevin enjoyed life to the fullest, rising early to bicycle or work the farm and retiring late after a full day of business and helping others. In all of these endeavors he conveyed a true zest for life.
Kevin is survived by his wife, Linda; three children, lan, Megan and Colin; his parents, A. Wallace and Mary Cunningham; a brother Andrew; and a sister Shelley Hochrieter, all of Etna. In his memory, the Kevin Cunningham Memorial Fund for Pancreatic Cancer Research, Box 959, Hanover, NH 03755 has been established.
