My deadline for February was November 15, and March was a column of reminiscences, so this is my first opportunity to say thanks for all your holiday greetings. Rosemary Casler's included three good color prints taken by son Chris during the panel on Russia in Rockefeller Center during our 60th.
Some of the messages suggest that a move from Florida to Arizona's salubrious climate might be beneficial. Dorie VanDerbeck had a two-month recovery from surgery for an unusual hiatal hernia, during which Scott learned a bit about cookery. Though still burdened with arthritis, his rheumatoid is in remission. Page Blanchard is in a nursing home. Edith Fitzgerald has more than enough problems, with macular degeneration, rheumatoid arthritis, and a lung condition. And Grace Shultz is having chemotherapy. We sympathize with all of you—and your spouses.
The Jim Clarks, on the other hand, are thriving. They've celebrated their fifth year of marriage with travels around the country, including our 60th, and 20 performances of the Half-Tone Band. Faithful Bob Chittim also seems to be prospering. Best of all, our dean, Dean Wiggin, gets to all the Dartmouth and Ivy League luncheons. At 89! Milt reported on Charlie Rauch's table-top disaster. (Was Charlie dancing on that table top?) With the next mini-reunion scheduled for September, Charlie should be there to lead us again in "Eleazar." And Pete Callaway, whose misfortunes also were reported, now says "Am getting better fast."
Finally, how do two world travelers greet each other? Well, in one case it was: "Dr. Livingstone, I presume." Chuck Jacobs writes about another meeting: "Fran Horn was in Palm Springs at a conference, and we spent a delightful Sunday driving him and Billie around our desert. He certainly is an interesting, likeable man—Bobbie and I enjoyed talking our way with him around the world (in 80 years). Strangely, he hasn't been in South America; will send him our new book when published this month." You others who decide to visit Latin America instead of the Middle East his year should remember Chuck's SouthAmerica Travel Digest. It's a bargain, and good.
