30 Among the greetings warming my recent 84th, none pleased me more than a phone call that morning from Lari Widmayer, recalling that Charlie and I shared that date. She sounded fine and said she was, and that it was a beautiful Hanover day.
What's this—tail wagging dog? Mountain coming to Mohammed? Travel writer ChuckJacobs asking me for travel information? Well, only a little. Chuck and Bobbie were considering the Ocean Pearl's pioneering cruise to Vietnam in July. As I'd been on three OceanPearl cruises since their last one, they wondered how the Pearl was holding up. Well enough, I said, to bring me back for my fourth one this August, touching New Zealand, Australia, some Indonesian islands, and Singapore. I hope for a Jacobs report later.
Thanks to Rip Vogt for sending me a page from the Vinson Hall News Letter announcing the arrival of a new resident named Col. George G. Kisevalter. So Kisty's new address is Carl Vinson Hall (largely a residence for retired military officers), 6251 Old Dominion Drive, McLean, VA 22101. The write-up is too long for my column and too interesting to lose, so I'll pass it on to Milt, as thanks for his birthday greeting.
Thanks too for John and Flavia Marsh's greetings. I've hoped that sometime I might catch them in Phoenix en route to their almost-annual visit with Flavia's sister in Sedona. However, John says they'll forego Arizona this year, planning instead a visit with son Doug, two grandchildren, and a new three-acre home in Vermont. John regrets that my summer itinerary doesn't include Perth, Australia, in which he's had a longtime interest and which "is only 3,000 miles from Sydney."
Carl Haffenreffer clipped and sent me his copy of my May column (the Dave Henderson story), across which he'd written: "Bob—fly that by me one more time. I'm lost up a creek without a parachute." I returned it with a copy of the April installment so he could get it all together, and with thanks because his was my only response. Like Dave's creator, the Yalie secretary, I'm dependent on classmates for news. Let it come.
