Long letters from Charlie Dwyer resulted from my paragraph in the Winter issue class notes on the 1927 freshman football game against Princeton. Charlie corrected first downs to 18 or 20 for us and three for the Tigers—score still zero to zero! He, our quarterback—in those days, you'll recall, the quarterback called the plays—expressed the frustration he shared with Sid Hazleton. He made, however, no mention of Sid's memorable "They do not choose to score," probably because Charlie in that instant was on the playing field, not on the sidelines with Sid. His recollection of that game pried open his reservoir of the history of Dartmouth football of our era—names, positions, plays, formations, skills, etc. It then struck me that compilation of such a history should be a challenge to an English major like Charlie who, among other accomplishments in his business career, had been the composer of Lever Bros.' weekly raw material letter which was sent to company offices world-wide and to the British Ministry of Food.
Dorothy Nieter wrote Ed Brummer that, while she can't make it to reunion, she got a big charge out of the questionnaire which, she believed, would elicit lots of guffaws from '31ers.
From Dallas Liza Linz wrote that Joe's last four years were tough ones. She has resumed travel, whichjoe and she had so much enjoyed.
In June 1990 the 1940 graduation class of Troy (N.Y.) High School celebrated its 50th reunion, during which the members roasted their honored guest, our Ed Picken, who had served the school for 42 years as teacher, coach, and director of athletics. Ed writes that he's in good spirits after successful eye lens implants. His navy lieutenant grandson, a flier off the carrier "Ranger," is now probably in the Gulf.
Lorene and Willard Matteson enjoyed a Royal Viking cruise around Cape Horn. Matty's note requested information on reunion, from which I inferred that they plan to attend same.
Why may we vote for three trustee candidates for one vacancy? Explanations are welcome.
