Several weeks ago I had a long overdue telephone conversation with Tom Carlsen at his home in upstate New York. Tom has been with the School of Social Work at Syracuse University since 1965, serving both as a professor in the field of social work policy and management and as director of admissions and records. Following graduation and a two-year stint in the U.S. Army, he did his graduate work at the University of Chicago earning a master's in 1959 and his doctorate in 1969. Tom and his wife, Ann, whom he married in 1956, have five grown children. Among them they have one doctorate and two master's degrees and seven grandchildren under four years of age. One son, Bill, a Dartmouth graduate with a Ph.D., teaches education and physical sciences at Cornell. Over the years Tom has been active with the local school board, scouting, and social welfare and health agencies. And, of course, the grandchildren are now a principal activity.
Ken Lundstrom forwarded a copy of his Christmas Newsletter with word that he has taken up a new job with the Freudenberg Spurweb Company in Durham, N.C. The Lundstroms had a busy year. Ken's wife, Kathy, holds two teaching positions, including a seventh grade Latin class. Son Jeff is a high school senior football and lacrosse star, while Bill is married and finishing his M.B.A. at Wilmington College, and Scott is a "banquet guru" in Wilmington. Last year, in addition to "keeping the cash register fall" at his former job, Ken found time to pursue his sports memorabilia hobby and found, among other items, a 1904 Dartmouth-Wesleyan football ticket. Ken is anxious to make contact with any '55s in the Durham area.
A recent New Hampshire Business Week article featured Jon Kropper, president and CEO of Hadco Corp., a Salem, N.H., manufacturer of advanced technology printed circuits that has managed to buck industry trends with continued growth in sales and earnings. Hadco's business is producing customer-specified electronic interconnect devices for original equipment manufacturers of electronic systems. Jon has led Hadco's strategy of investing in new equipment, process, and technologies and broadening the customer base. Not surprisingly, the article predicts continued success for Jon and Hadco.
Ralph Sauter continues to pass along notes and comments that have come his way with class dues. One of our most loyal supporters in that regard is Ryutaro Shindo of Takarazuka Japan. He was one of the relatively few international students in our class. TomByrne reports that he and Ann are expecting their first grandchild in June via son Rich ana his West German wife. Tom and Kilt Andrew from Down East in Maine both mention that Hank Stephenson has a new wife, has retired from the oil business, and is spending much time in Florida on the golf course or in refinishing furniture. In his note, Kilt says that he has been rediscovering the delights of keeping company with the opposite sex. Good to see that some of us are still young at heart.
