Back in town: Harry and Ginny Grieger, who have yo-yoed back and forth between Norwich, Vt., and Florida over the last decade, are back in Norwich. They are renting there while banging out a new house up the road apiece in Thetford, Vt. A bundle of acres on top of a hill, with a view to the North Pole.
Town and Gown: due to move to Hanover this summer, from New Canaan, Conn., are John and Jeanne Weeks. They're signed into Kendal at Hanover, the new 250-unit retirement community on the Lyme Road just a Gelandesprung beyond the ski jump. John received an award from the New Canaan town band for his 30 years of service blowing and toting his big sousaphone.
Out of town: Dave and Margaret Sanders have headed west, from Weston, Mass., to Las Vegas, to be exact, to be nearer their three daughters (in Las Vegas, St. Louis, and Dallas). Dave is retired, still dabbling a bit in real estate investing, but mosdy walking, playing tennis, and getting to know the local environment. "No casinos," says Dave, "although we occasionally succumb to a game of bingo."
On the go: Bob Miller and friend Diane postcarded us from Guadalajara, Mexico, where they spent whole day on a guided tour of Orozco murals, of which there are many there, says Bob. Some are painted on domed ceilings, a la Mchaelangelo, and you look at them via an 8x12 hand held mirror rather than lying on your back on a bench. Bob and Diane were on a three-month tour of Mexico and Guatemala in their RV, part of a caravan of 14 rigs out of El Paso.
The other Bob Miller, Twitch, our newsletter editor, responded to bad news from his old firm, J.H. Day Cos. in Cincinnati, and has come out of retirement to put it back on its feet. Likewise Ben Jones, who has had to give up "the quiet life" and is back in the office trying to rescue his old outfit, Monarch Capital, the holding company for Monarch Life Insurance Cos.
Had a nice chat with Gordie Plummer out in the Cleveland area, where he located in 1957. He retired in 1986 after 30 years with TRW Inc. and lots of globetrotting, and thus finds it hard sitting still. He's still consulting part-time and he and Barbara travel, but he misses world-wide friends and locations. Two kids and two grandchildren live nearby in Ohio. Gordie says he stays in touch with JohnFurfey and Dave Eckels.
Kudos to Ted Mortimer, who on April 13 received the Northwestern University Alumni Merit Award, presented to those who have distinguished themselves in their professions or fields of endeavor.
Al Hormel, in Weston, Conn., says "retirement" for a free-lance writer/artist like himself has particular aspects. A triple-bypass a couple of years ago has slowed him down some, but he still logs a lot of time in front of the typewriter and drawing board.
Alas, two more deaths. Charles Wilder in the end of April and John Englehorn May 8. Our sympathies.
That's it. Blessings.
