22 A 1992 graduating woman recently asked, "How can Dartmouth 1922 find anything to talk about at their 70th Reunion?" Well, some memories never fade.
When 395 freshmen came to Dartmouth in September 1918 they were the largest class in the College. Total student enrollment was 750 men. Hundreds of Dartmouth men were fighting (112 were dying) in World War I.
In Hanover almost every student was in the Student Army (or Navy) Training Corps under strict military discipline. Those at age 18 or older received full government support. The 109 volunteers under 18 had the same discipline but paid for food, lodging, and tuition.
At termination of the SATC in December 1918, 48 freshmen left Hanover. In 1919 the class had 89 additions and 16 in 1920, bringing total membership to 500.
From these war-torn ranks Dartmouth graduated 251 men. The class had 18 Phi Betes, 43 graduates with honors, and—first in Dartmouth annals—three Rhodes Scholars in one class.
The class developed 22 educators, 20 lawyers, 18 physicians, 15 bankers, 11 engineers, and many in other vocations, chiefly business.
1922 has supported Dartmouth in two fundamentals: (1) with profound gratitude to all loyal Twoters and the '22 Ladies, the class has been the source of $10.6 million in benefices to the College; and (2) the class, having sent 106 sons to Dartmouth, is presently concentrating on grandchildren.
And now '22 congratulates '92, but wonders what they will find to talk about at their 70th in 2062.
