ONE OF DARTMOUTH'S FASTESTGROWING MINORITIES MAKES ITS PRESENCE FELT (AND SEEN)

Aromas of bul-go-gee and kim-chee wafted into the entranceway as Dartmouth students lined up for dinner in Webster Hall one night last May. Women swept by in ch'ima, long, high-waisted silk skirts. Local children among the 400-odd people in attendance were there to see the tae kwan do performances.

The occasion was the fourth annual Korean Culture Night, an event used by one of Dartmouth's fastest-growing ethnic communities to make its presence known. Some ten percent of students on campus are Asian-American; Korean-Americans compose about a third of them, and the proportion seems to be growing. A formal group of Korean-Americans on campus advocates the development of a Korean studies program which would include Korean language, as well as the nation's history and literature.
