From Syracuse, N.Y., where Joel Potash is the medical director of Hospice of Central New York, word has come that Joel's peers recently voted him the state's Family Practitioner of the Year. This followed his receipt of the 1992 Onondaga County Medical Society's award for community service. In addition to his private practice, Joel continues as an associate professor of family medicine at the SUNY Health Science Center. Perhaps the greatest tribute comes from a longtime patient of his who said, "He's a good listener, and being a good listener means that he's a good learner as well as teacher."
Bob Eleveld, our class representative to the Alumni Council, was joined at the November council meeting by John Parker. Saturday night they were united with Joel Portugal for the council dinner, at which Dave Bradley received an Alumni Award. Sally Prescott says that she has sent the full citation to JohnMurphy. Look for it in John's next class newsletter. I wonder if Dave bicycled to the alumni dinner? My anonymous source reported that last summer Dave won first prize in the Audrey Prouty Memorial Century Bike Ride and raised $6,670 for cancer research at the Norris Cotton Research Center in Hanover.
Another busy classmate is Jim Johnson. In addition to his responsibilities as die chairman of the board and CEO of the Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae), he has been elected to the board of trustees of the Carnegie Corporation. In announcing the election, the president of the corporation commented, "His deep grasp of social problems, public policy, and finance will surely help this foundation to fulfill its mission to promote the advancement and diffusion of knowledge and understanding among the people of the United States."
Class dues are a vehicle for communicating some news about your family and yourself. When sending in his dues to Bob Gilges,George Failmezger wrote, "Well, the Green is 2-1, looks like a good Ivy League race." How right he was. Now living in Fairfax, Va., he proudly reported that his son, a member of the class of 1987, has recently passed his bar exams in Virginia. George asked that we join him in a round of snaps.
Last spring Harv Wilson, in his capacity as the president of the Dartmouth Club of Olympia, Wash., was among the first to communicate to the Dartmouth Alumni Council College Relations Group. He asked the Board of Trustees to engage in a review of its policies regarding the diminished number of student course offerings as a result of the reduction of faculty teaching loads. To address this issue, I know that the Campaign to Excel has designated part of its funds to increase the number of faculty. Seems to show that the issue continues to receive needed attention.
In Granville, N.Y., Phil Berke has been a Washington County judge for the past ten years. In his "spare" time, Phil has been active in Granville community affairs, as evidenced by his being named the Granville Sentinel's Man of the Year.
