58 Enjoyed a visit with Don McCree at his office just off of Battery Park in New York City. With a lovely view of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, I would have a tough time keeping my mind on my work. Don was looking remarkably calm, cool, and collected despite the fact that just two days before had come the revelation of the horrendous financial loss incurred by the merchant-banking firm of Barings P.L.C. and its subsequent collapse. Don quickly said that IBJ Schroder Bank & Trust is not involved in such financial activities, but he did allow that it was the kind of nightmare that every financial institution dreaded because of the extensive use of computers. I guess the moral to the story is, if you are a chief financial officer, make sure you have a young Dartmouth grad sitting by your side.

With many of us soon to be in our sixties, we might do well to have a chat with Jim Fannin. While I hope that none of us will be needing a headstone during the coming decade, seems Jim knows quite a bit about the repair and conservation of old ones. His recent work included the repair of vandalized stones in the Dartmouth Cemetery.

Walt Fogarty will be joining the ranks of the retired come this July. His 33 years with Colgate-Palmolive probably represent the kind of career that will be less and less common for those who will be graduating from the College this June. Shelter Island is the place where he and his wife will work on their tennis games in an effort to become the best overfifties players in the area.

After some 45 years of hitting tennis balls, my elbow has decided it is time for another form of exercise. Mountain biking and crosscountry skiing seem to be the most appealing at this time. Wonder how many of the rest of you are experiencing a similar change in athletic endeavors. Reminds me of the great quote I read some years ago in the book Middle Aged Rage: "When you hit 39, the warranty runs out and the replacement parts get harder and harder to find."
