Try to imagine Brendan Hand's state of mind as he wrote the following note: "I'm finishing my second year of law school at SUNY-Buffalo. It's going well so far, except I can't get the damn window in my car to roll up and it's cold as hell out there, if you know what I mean."The author of this column remembers feeling this way after a campus police officer broke his car door lock while trying to help him get into his car after he locked his keys inside.
I received a letter from ScottJ. Zashin, M.D. (Rheumatology), to notify the class that LouMabley, who recently moved to Dallas, Texas, was co-winner of the Dartmouth Club of Dallas Golf Open in the fall.
Jon Nordmeyer, Jim Yu, and Ed Kelley checked in with me late one evening by telephone. Jon's at the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vt., in an ESL (English as a Second Language) master's program. He recendy went to Ecuador for two months of teaching and will return to finish his degree by June. Jim is a second-year at Vanderbilt Law, and he will be working with a firm in Roseland, N.J., this summer. Ed is working at the Health Care Advisory Board in Washington, D.C., a company that specializes in healthcare research for hospitals in this country, England, Australia, and Canada. The above-mentioned three reported to me that Shailan Shah is now working toward an M.D./ Ph.D. degree at Columbia Medical and is studying the spinal cord development of chick embryos.
There are at least a few '90s out in Madison, Wise., according to Tim Cleary, who's living above a Taco Bell there and is a first-year student in the American history Ph.D. program. He says he's become a "Gramscian hegemonist," but declines to say what that is (call the Baker Reference Room if you need a definition). William Boulware and JohnLuedke are at the law school in Madison. SusySvatek is allegedly there too, but Tim had not run into her as of his writing.
John Lynch moved from the National Archives in D.C. to Merrill Lynch in New York City. Jono Sollinger is studying psy- chology at Harvard. Brad Lang is at Duke Law, and Derek Symer is working at the National Holocaust Museum while taking graduate courses towards a Ph.D. and instructing undergraduates in American University's German history department.
If you're in or near Madison, you might want to contact Tim, since he mentioned plans for a '90 mini-reunion there this spring. His address: 536 State #3, Madison, WI 53703 (don't forget, he lives above Taco Bell).
And now, that section you all wait for eagerly issue after issue. It's the marriages and en- gagements section! It's really become a fixture in the '90 Class Notes. Mary Vogrin and PaulHill are engaged, and correspondent BeckyThomas even added some color to this announcement by saying that their relationship was born freshman fall in Math 17. These three gathered at Mary and Elizabeth Burnett's apartment in Hoboken, N.J., along with DrewJones and John Kelly to celebrate the New Year. Paul and John are traveling to New Orleans for an ultimate-frisbee tournament during Mardi Gras. Drew spent six weeks in Thailand. Becky was also on the West Coast for the holidays and saw Dan Posner and JoshBlum in L.A.
Finally, I am sorry to report the deaths of two members of our class in recent months: Joseph K. Lee and Stephen DeMaio. Obituaries will appear in a futture issue.
