Placekicker, Kansas City Chiefs

Football fans across the country know Lowery as the most accurate placekicker in history, a man who holds or shares four NFL and 17 franchise records. People in the Kansas City area know him for his superhuman volunteer efforts Y.M.C.A., cerebral palsy, anti-drug programs. It is in Washington, though, where Nick Lowery has made a name that may get even bigger when his playing days are over. He has been a legislative aid for three U.S. senators and for former Secretary of Transportation Elizabeth Dole, and he was the first active professional athlete to be made an official member of the White House staff. Admirers predict that Lowery will enter the halls of the Capitol Building as a congressman at about the same time he enters the football Hall of Fame.
