IN RESPONSE TO MY column as president of the Alumni Council asking how alumni should be involved in the College's affairs, one respondent wrote that my question "may turn out to be illuminating, helpful, confusing, dangerous, or all of the above." I'd say all of the above.
A couple of themes recur in the responses: that alumni should be able always to voice opinions about topics concerning the College, and that there needs to be a mechanism that conveys information to and from alumni consistently and clearly. One respondent wrote, "To whom can these alumni voice their feelings and beliefs?" He continued, "Certainly not the Alumni Council!" He said the Council is not equipped "to listen to and act upon alumni views."
I DISAGREE. You have at least one Alumni Council representative, from your class, club, or class association. He or she will convey your opinions through the Council to the administration, faculty, president, and Trustees. Write me at 28 Deerberry Lane, Monmouth Junction, NJ 08852, or fax: 908/329-9567.I can direct you to the appropriate Councillor. And I would like to know more of your thoughts about my original question: How much influence should alumni have in the affairs of the College?
