MARCUERITF. DURAS, TheLover, translated by Barbara Bray (Pantheon Books, 1985)—There is also a recent film based on The Lover, by Jean Jacques Annaud, starring Jane March and Tony Leung. It is quite faithful to the novel, although Duras herself did not approve of the screenplay and wrote her own version in protest, which has been released as a new book, The Lover from NorthChina (but has not been made into a film).

MADELEINEL'ENGLE, TheLove Letters (Ballantine-Epiphany Series, 1983) This is not a translation of the work we read in class, Letters of a Portuguese Nun. Rather, it is a novel about a modern woman who discovers the letters on a trip to Portugal. A version of the letters in English is incorporated into the novel.
