Rules
Rules apply to the class of 1998 and beyond. The object of the game is to graduate. To do this you must pass 35 courses, demonstrate proficiency in English composition, and know a foreign language (or at least have passed three terms studying a foreign language, which is not exactly the same thing). You must participate during the summer term after sophomore year and during the fall, winter, and spring terms of freshman and senior years. And you must be at Dartmouth for at least six terms total. You must swim 50 yards or take swimming lessons. You must take physical education for three terms (intercollegiate sports count). You must complete a major, including a "culminating experience" such as a thesis or creative project, senior seminar, group tutorial, or a combination. And you must pass these courses in particular: • Freshman writing seminar. • One course each in European, North American, and non-Western culture. • One interdisciplinary course, which is usually taught by faculty from at least two different fields. • One course in the arts. • One course in literature. • One course in philosphical or historical analysis or religion. • One course in international or comparative study. • Two courses in social analysis. • One course in quantitative and deductive sciences. • Two courses in the natural sciences. • One course in technology or applied science. Tips: If you play the game right, you can satisfy more than one requirement with I a single course. For instance, a course in, say, French literature might cover both the European culture and the literature bases.
