For nearly 100 years the Republican Party has claimed that it originated in 1854 in Ripon, Wisconsin. But in his new book A Tall State Revisited, Hugh Gregg, a former New Hampshire governor, claims that Amos Tuck 1835 organized the first meeting of a brand-new Grand Old Party at Major Blake's Tavern in Exeter, New Hampshire, October 12, 1853.
