MARGE TOMCHUK, a distinguished printmaker, was recently commissioned by the Dartmouth class of 1954 to design a limited edition etching portraying scenes meaningful to '54s. Pictured here in her New Canaan, Conn., studio, she displays one of the prints, which will be presented to the recipients of a newlyestablished "Class of 1954 Award'' program.
The etching incorporates such well-known campus figures as John Sloan Dickey '29, president of the College during 1954's undergraduate years; the current president, David McLaughlin '54; the "Alp Doodler"; and even a typical campus dog. There are also such familiar scenes and memorabilia as a senior cane; the Commons Dining Hall, phased out after 1954 s freshman year; Tanzi's original sign; a centerof-the-Green bonfire; and the facade of Dartmouth Hall.
The first-numbered etching in the edition of 54 was presented to the College at Dartmouth Night in Boston on October 16 and will be hung in the Class of 1954 Room in the new Rockefeller Social Sciences Center. The second print will have been presented to David McLaughlin for his own personal use when he addressed the New York alumni on December 1. The remaining prints in the edition will be bestowed on an annual basis on '54s and occasional other members of the Dartmouth family who "have shown distinctive achievement in their work in behalf of the class or the College, in their career, or in their community in such a manner as to bring unusual benefit upon themselves, the class, and Dartmouth College."
