An every-issue guide to staying in touch with Dartmouth

The campus celebrates the 100th Dartmouth Night October 20. We've heard from a highly placed source that pre-bonfire address will be delivered by the event's founder, President William Jewett Tucker himself. The torchlight parade begins at 7:30. On Saturday, games include football against Colgate and field hockey against Cornell.

You don't have to return to Hanover to get a recharge of your Dartmouth education though that's a good idea in itself, of course. (Watch this page for future information about Alumni College.) LaSt year more than 1,200 people attended seminars with Dartmouth faculty at clubs throughout the nation.

If you're in Pittsburgh at the end of October, don't miss Dartmouth's "Dino Squad," Professors Joel Blum and Chuck Drake, doing a; seminar on "What Killed the Dinosaurs?" The Squad was featured on the cover of this magazine back in 1990. At least as current a topic, by a few million years, is "Sound Bite Politics." A team of experts including Professors Catherine Shapiro and Paul Argenti, with Congressman Christopher Shays and State Senator George Jepson '76 will be pithily addressing the Fairfield County, Connecticut, Club, on November 4.

"Landscapes of Murder" will be taught in Minnesota by Professors Laurence Davies and George Demko. The date hasn't been set yet. Also look for seminars in the coming weeks with the Long Island, Washington, D.(and Southwest New Hampshire Clubs. For more information call Joyce Greene (603) 646 2454 or email her at joyce. green@dartmouth.edu. If you're plugged into the Internet's World Wide Web, you can also get upto-date seminar information on a Web page. (That's where we got most of the facts for this column.) The address: http://www.dartmouth.edu/pages/dcaa/conted/ace-seminars.html.

If you prefer your global exploration more real than virtual, consider two alumni trips scheduled for this winter. On January 25, Earth Sciences Professor Gary Johnson will lead a group; on a three-week expedition to southern South America, including Patagonia and the Chilean Lakes. Johnson promises glaciers, snowcapped Andean peaks, fjords, the Patagonian steppes, deserts, southern and Antarctic beech forests, white water rivers, pristine lakes, and the awe-inspiring Iguassu Falls.

Drama Professor Emeritus Errol Hill, on the other hand, offers "eight days of thoughtful relaxation" on a cruise through the West Indies, including lectures on the culture and history of the Caribbean. Again, ask Joyce Greene for information, or watch for ads in this here Alumni Magazine.

Meanwhile, back home you have yet another reason to get a modem for your Dartmouth now has a World Wide Web home page dedicated to alumni.
