Via the College we learned of the passing of MartinHowell on November 13. (Obit in this issue.)
We quote from a green card sent by Muggsy Bly: "Pete is doing a great job with the words in Thirty-Nine Out, but where did he get all the old men to pose for his pictures? Bud Richardson was one I recognized, and he looked real good." Muggsy went on to say that heart surgery and other problems have kept him from reunions, but he was looking toward Betsy Emmons's gathering in Florida in March.
Writes Colin Churchill from Hilton Head, S.C., "Thank you for the birthday card. When I was younger they bothered me, but now I'm sort of proud of them as I'm in good health and have much to be thankful for including many memories of Dartmouth."
Kevin Fay and pretty wife Lynn are back out West. This is the fourth time they returned to Santa Barbara. They can be reached at 2525 State St. #28, zip 93105, phone: (805) 687-3402. He writes, "turning the clock back, it was the fall of 1935: the freshmen were attacking the dorm and the sophomores. There were hoses, people, and water everywhere. Suddenly, Spud Bray appeared short old with glasses. He said something like, 'That's all,' and the hoses, the water, and the people disappeared."
Bob Wehmeyer's home and orchard in Kezars Falls, Maine, are on the market. He contemplates moving to Ocean View Retirement Community in Falmouth, Maine, before next winter. Bob and Bea remain in very good health, and they have been enjoying some time at elderhostels which are the "in" thing with '39ers of late.
The late Dave Schilling is much in the news, with a new book about his exploits just published. We had a note from his ex-roomie Gene Weeks, who sent along a squib about Dave in the Retired Officer Magazine, and we heard from another source who sent a picture and bio of Dave from The Mighty Eighty, another magazine.
A sad note from Ed Cummings in Virginia Beach reporting that his wife Martha, his high school sweetheart, died on December 13, a real blow which gave him a somber Christmas.
And finally, after 25 years the electric score-board at Memorial Field, given by our class, has developed as many health problems as most of the class. It will taks some $45,000 to replace it. The Executive Committee has decided not to divert funds from the Alumni Fund. However, those of us who are interested are encouraged to send along a check to Burt McMannis, 155 East Ave., New Canaan, CT 06840-5613, made out to "Dartmouth College" by June 1 for this cause. We are told our original plaque at the board will remain, so it would be nice to have some part in the new one.
