Just 61 years ago we seniors were facing a fall "Program of Exercises." It started on Friday, June IS, with a Dartmouth Band concert on campus, then we visited President and Mrs. Hopkins at their home, and there was a commencement ball in the gymnasium.
Then on Saturday and Sunday after Prexy's baccalaureate address, we went to our fraternity reunions, an alumni parade, a baseball game with Cornell, a performance of Lolanthe, a talk on the Orozco frescoes, a Webster Hall concert, meetings at Thayer, the Med School, and Tuck, and Dartmouth movies. On June 18 at 10 a.m. we had our Commencement in the Bema.
Now, 61 years later, we look south. The Hank Werners enjoyed their vacation month in Palm Beach and made '34 connections with Dottie Morton and Babe Shea, our old soccer and lacrosse goalie, and at a Dartmouth Club luncheon they saw Herman Spitzer and Bob Bagley.
Back north, some classmates are still active in their careers. For example, Dr. Frank Lepreau still sees drug and alcohol patients daily at a public-care facility in Fall River, Mass.
I caught up with Charlie and EleanorArmes, thanks to their phone call, after I had written them to ask about their move from Cape Cod to Chambersburg, Pa. They like being closer now to their two sons, their daughter, and the grandchildren. Lots of us have similarly moved closer to where we can keep in contact with extended families.
Harry and Dotty Espenscheid enjoyed their winter shift to Santa Barbara, but first they had a fine fall visit with Dick and MayHouck at their beautiful home on the summit of Lookout Mountain, near Chattanooga.
One class statistic I haven't mentioned: 38 percent of our 664 entering '34s went to prep school prior to their Hanover days. I don't think the percentage of prepsters is that high today.
Now you'll be spared farther arithmetic that cleans up all my reunion-time survey of '34 statistics. For this is the last column of my 14th year as class secretary. It was due on March 15 at the Alumni Magazine Office, and it's still snow time in Hanover. But in spite of Bill Schertnan's newsletter prediction, there was no way that I could come close to topping my 100 days of cross-country skiing last year. Have a good summer!
