After his second space voyage (chat is, the shuttle flight back in September), Jim Newman was looking forward to such down-to-earth activities as going hiking, working around the house, and spending time with Mary Lee, his bride of six months. Jim met Mary Lee, an attorney with Amoco, on a blind date two years ago. She recalls asking what he did. "He said he was an astronaut," says Mary Lee. "I wasn't sure I believed him, but I thought, hey, it's a good line."

Last summer Jeff Pontius moved to Pittsford, N.Y., near Rochester. "The kids (Stephen 8 and Melissa 5) are looking forward to a real snowy winter," writes Jeff. "My wife, Barbara, has more pragmatic expectations after growing up in Minnesota. I'm having a blast as president of the Ray-Ban division of Bausch & Lomb. Shades anyone?"

Although he's still in the Marine Corps Reserves, Burke Whitman is also president of Deerfield Healthcare Corp., a fastgrowing enterprise that develops, owns, and operates senior day-care centers in the eastern United States.

Burke and Sarah '88 live in an historic village in Maryland called Dickeyville, which is now part of Baltimore. "It looks like a New England village," writes Burke, "and it reminds us constantly of our beloved Hanover. Our house, built in the 1830s, was originally the village jail. We live for the outdoors hiking, biking, horseback riding, but no more rugby." Sarah recently left the White House to become regional manager with Sylvan Learning Centers Inc.

From an excellent profile in the Amherst (Mass.) Bulletin, we learn that TrippPeake is president of Mass. Ventures, a western Massachusetts business incubator working in partnership with the University of Massachusetts Economic Development Office.

If you look up "entrepreneur" in the dictionary, they've started running Tripp's picture. After Dartmouth he taught for three years at the Pennington School near Princeton, then in 1981 started a middle school (no small feat) in the area. Tripp ran the school for three years, then headed for the Yale School of Management. After graduation he went to work for the University—City Science Center in Philadelphia, a business incubator founded to foster technology-based growth businesses.

Then Tripp and a Yale classmate, Jonathan Gorham, started Science Park Associates, a consulting firm that helped about 100 new businesses get off the ground. Science Park Associates also does feasibility planning for cities, states, and regions on starting their own technology parks, which is how Tripp got involved with Mass Ventures.

Scott Marber is now senior vice president of corporate sales and marketing for Nova Care Inc., a leading provider of medical rehab services headquartered in King of Prussia, Penn. As vice president of sales and national accounts for Olsten Kimberly Qualitycare in Boston, Scott increased the national revenues 12-fold in three years and ended up in charge of sales for all of Olsten Kimberly—a $1.2-billion operation. Scott, Molly, and their four kids—Max 3, Alex 2, and twins Shelby and Jacqueline (born July 22)—have successfully relocated from Westborough to Chester Springs, Penn.

SMASH Advertising, the New York/Boston firm founded by MarkTomizawa, won two awards for the ad campaign it created to launch CNBC Asia, proving that U.S. agencies can deliver effective promotions despite barriers of language, culture, and distance. "Our goal was to create promotion that worked in the Asian culture, yet stood out in a high-profile way," explains SMASH Creative Director Linda Button '79, who is also Mark's wife.

Linda and Mark recently moved from New York to Massachusetts to join forces with Rick Beyer and consolidate SMASH's creative team at its new Boston headquarters. SMASH provides marketing and production services to clients in broadcasting, cable, syndication, and publishing. They do on-air campaigns, TV and radio commercials, print advertising, and program elements.

One day last spring, while I was working for a few weeks at People, I passed JohnHarvey in the hall and he mentioned that he'd love to take on the job of class secretary/newsletter editor someday. I thought about it, and it occurred to me that this is as good a time as any to pass the torch.

I've enjoyed writing these columns and putting out our class newsletter, and now John can get a chance to enjoy it in the same way.

My name is at the bottom of this column, but you should direct all future correspondence to John at 562 West End Ave., Apt. 4-F/New York, NY 10024-2718, or call him at (212) 580-4185.
