James O. Freedman himself gasped when he saw the final tally in early October: $568,229,430. Going more than $143 million over the original goal, the Will to Excel Campaign gave Dartmouth's endowment a $234.6 million infusion, 22 percent over the campaign target. The College's annual budget got a big help from the Alumni Fund, which grew to a record $13.9 million with more than 25,500 donors in 1996.

Donors kicked in $54 million in new endowment for undergraduate scholarships, far exceeding the target of $40 million. An additional $ 18.9 million in endowment for fellowships will benefit Dartmouth's graduate students. The campaign set out to fund 30 new full professorships and ended up with 25.

The results of the campaign are already being seen on campus in the form of new construction. Campaign-funded bricks and mortar include the Burke chemistry laboratory, Collis Student Center, Sudikoff Laboratory for Computer Science, Rauner Special Collections Library in Webster Hall, two Med School buildings, the Moore Theater in Hopkins Center, and the Roth Center for Jewish Life.

The most impressive statistic of all may be the number of donors: almost 60,000. You can breath out now, President Freedman.
