When this column is published, we in the Northeast will have forgotten the Blizzard of' 96, which is occurring as I write. Bertie andJoe Bird will move in August, but in the meantime they had a great family Thanksgiving and spent two weeks in Orlando and Vero Beach, Fla.
Chet Berry is now into his 21st year of retirement. Yon would never know it based on their travels. Last September they attended our dinner party in Eastham, Mass. Donna and I also had New Year's Eve lunch with Ruthe and Chet on the Cape.
Fred Fuld writes, "Managed to get to Scotland four out of the last five years for deerstalking and carriage driving with four-horse teams. Gloria casts for salmon with 16-foot rods. These hobbies force both of us to remain in good health physically and mentally."
Ledyard Canoe Club reported that last summer club advisor Walter "Ike" Weed launched a real dugout canoe he had carved from the largest pine tree on his Etna woodlot.
The 1940 DAM column is read by members of other classes. Edward B. Smith '45 wrote a footnote on Stet Whitcher attending the Dartmouth Alumni College. "My wife Pat and I attended the first college. Shortly after returning to work at Bank of Boston, I happened to sit at the same lunch table with Stet. I spoke so enthusiastically about Alumni College that he signed up the following summer. Therefore, I feel that I can take credit in peaking his curiosity about a wonderful program he has enjoyed for many years."
Jack Fitzgerald, a history major, recently discovered the meaning of "Praise God." When two pilgrims met they used to cry "Praise God" as a greeting because both were still alive. Joe Dunford and Bob Weil regret missing the 55th Reunion but are looking forward to the 60th.
Donna and your secretary attended an Elderhostel at Hilton Head, S.C., followed by our fourth year of "Savannah Onstage," which is now an Elderhostel—two terrific weeks.
