Every new year I resolve to spend more time making an effort to see Dartmouth friends in the New York area. Thus far, 1996 has been productive! I recently caught up with Brett Haber, who you can still catch on ESPN Sportscenter. He and Jen Diamond (longtime HTH) bought and moved into a house in Westport, Conn. Despite having to shovel themselves out during Blizzard '96, they are enjoying the suburbs. Katy jozus is now working for The New Yorker, and ran (and completed!) the New York City Marathon in November with
her two sisters. Eric Schwartz wrote to share the good news that he and Heidi Kern '94 are engaged to be married next August in Freeport, Me. Eric is in the first year of his radiology residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital of University of Miami, after graduating from Johns Hopkins Medical School last spring. Heidi is also in school at University of Miami, having started her Ph.D. in developmental psychology this past fall. We wish them the best of luck!
Congratulations are also in order for Cheryl Marabello and fiancee Andrew Kirkpatrick. Cheryl related the following as to how the two spent the summer after their first year of teaching: "We busied ourselves for the summer at Lake George with the restoration and sailing of a small sailboat, growing bushels of zucchini, canoeing in pursuit of Great Blue herons, re-sheet-rocking fallen ceilings (the last is a great deal more romantic than it may at first seem)." Cheryl teaches seventh-grade geography and eighth-grade American history in Swampscott, while Andrew teaches seventh- and eighth-grade science in a middle school. They recently moved to a new apartment in Salem.
I've heard through the grapevine that both Dave Hillman and Dave Anders are engaged. All I know, is that Hills is engaged to a woman named Lisa, and Ders is engaged to Lauren Grollman '90.
Pilar Melendez Korgel sent a picture of her two boys (Hunter, age two years, and Colton, age six months), and the news that husband Brian will be finishing up his chemistry/engineering Ph.D. at UCLA this spring. Pilar still loves teaching fourth/fifth grade, and is enjoying being on the West Coast with her family (while it lasts), because once Brian receives his degree, the Korgels may be moving again!
Michael McDaniel has moved to Seattle, where he is now working at Microsoft, and reports having bumped into Amy Arlin, who is doing well...
Ross Mandell is out in the Silicon Valley, where he is still working for T/Maker Co. (software sales and marketing) and has been busy advancing his soccer reffing career. He is in his second season and was fortunate enough to have officiated some top Division I college games as well as top amateur and professional games (USISL is the pro outdoor league until next year, when Major League Soccer hits the scene). According to Ross, last he knew, Richie Graham was playing pro in the USISL for the Philadelphia Freedom. Ross recently hung out with BrendanO'Sullivan, who is living in San Francisco.
If you haven't done so, make sure you finalize all your plans to be up in Hanover over the weekend of June 14-16 for what is sure to be an exciting Reunion! I'm looking forward to seeing many of you there!
