More news from long, long ago...Christie Cameron wrote to me back in October to let me know how she spent her summer before starting her master's program in engineering at Stanford. She spent her summer before August traveling, spending most of her time in North Carolina visiting with Geoff Zawtocki and Julie Morris. Geoff spent his summer doing research at Duke in biomedical engineering and training for soccer. Julie is living in Chapel Hill and doing research on cystic fibrosis at UNC while applying to medical schools. Christie also had news from '94s she saw at Karen (Rieper)Fidelak's wedding this summer in Marblehead: Jason Fortier and Michelle Moore, who had just returned from a trip across country, were there. Michelle is now working for Monitor in Boston and Jason has a design engineering job in the Boston area as well. Just a slight digression I actually ran into Michelle and Jason at John Harvard's this past fall while I was in the midst of a rather nightmarish blind date. Just wanted to let you both know that as far as pleasant surprises go, seeing you was the highlight of that particular evening!
But back to wedding attendants...BillThibault, who is working for IBM in Burlington, Vt., was also at Karen's wedding, along with Missy Wei, who is still at Dartmouth working on her M.S. in engineering. Veronica Doherty came up from New York City for the bash, Iris Chou came from New Haven, and Katherine Osborne tore herself away from the Peace Corps in Africa to see Karen and Jon exchange their vows. And finally, representing the West Coast were OllieWeir, who is working for Intel in Palo Alto, and, of course, Christie...Jessica Tarnow wrote to let us know that she survived her one-year stint on the West Coast, and is now back home, safe and sound in the heart of New York City. Jessica now works in the education department of the New York Academy of Sciences. "We do science enrichment programs for primary and secondary students and teacher training in the sciences," writes Jessica. "The academy gets great speakers and many events are open to the public, so any science-minded alums in the city should check it out!" Jessica ran into many '94s and '95s at a mini-reunion this past fall sponsored by Mike Cohen, Alex Kopit, and RandyWhite. "A little overwhelming after the
laidback scene in SF!" writes Jessica. Amie Rappaport wrote in just after her return from a trip to Florence. "Before that I spent some time with Ben Metternich, who showed me a great time in Cologne!" writes Amie. "I was there from the beginning of carnival season it's called 11/11 and at 11:11 a.m. we began to drink!" Gee, Ames, you sure that's not called Whiter Carnival?! Anyway, Amie also had an interesting story to share with the alumni world: She was sharing a taxi in midtown with an "elderly gentleman," and in the midst of conversation, Amie mentioned that she went to Dartmouth. He explained to her that he had many great friends who studied there. "We continued talking and...he said he knew Theodore Geisel.. .and President Kemeny he did their portraits—and then I knew I was sharing a taxi with Everett Raymond Kinstler!" He also did portraits of the Montgomery family at Dartmouth as well as many other famous people. "He explained that Dr. Seuss had even added a bit to his own portrait at Mr. Kinstler's request!" Pretty cool, eh? Well, it's 11:11 a.m. and carnival season in the publishing world, so I'm off to toss a few back before lunch. In the meantime, sharpen those pencils and start writing. And if you don't have those archaic little sharpeners handy, then just send me an e-mail.
