OCTOBER 1997 Mary Lougee Ripley

Guest written by Rip: To us the big news from Hanover is the passing of "Mr. Dartmouth," Ort Hicks '21. Mary and I were blessed with a warm friendship with Lois and Ort. They were the best of lovers, and he depended on his "Loie" more than most folks knew. When she died he found some relief in knowing she was spared the pain of their separation and took comfort in being the one to bear the burden. Ort often spoke his gratitude for the beauty of Hanover and the blessing of living close to Dartmouth. He always honored the words, "Lest the old traditions fail." He so loved his fellow man he could see only honor in his cherished Indian symbol and wore his Indian tie as long as he could tie it.

"How the young folks do amaze us And so often seem to faze us

And our ever growing smaller group of peers.

We're no longer so effective, But we lead them in perspective

As we look down from our mounting tower of years."
