It used to be said there are more cows in Vermont than people. My guess is this still applies to the area around Sutton, Vt., which Bill and Myra Mathers call home, and where Myra's parents years ago operated a dairy business, so-called Gordon Farm. Bill and Myra hosted their seventh annual class picnic at the farm in July, and before I get into the details, a word about how to reach Gordon Farm. I called Bill for instructions and this is what he told me: "Exit I-91 at Lyndonville, take US-5 north for four or five miles, go over a hump, down a depression, watch for a tiny sign on left saying Sutton," and so on. I tell this story for a year ago Don and Ibba Hagerman became hopelessly lost and never did find the Mathers place. No problem this time, however.

Picnic attendance was smaller than usual (our ranks are thinning, to around 200, according to Yank Price), there were several cancellations for a variety of reasons, health being one. The weather was perfect, Mathers hospitality, as always, superb, and from what I could observe everyone present looked in reasonably good shape. Bill's new knees were functioning OK; former treasurer Put Kingsbury and Louise showed up from California (they were summering near their former home in Keene, N.H.).

Also on hand was Put's successor, BillAdams, who arrived with VP Dick Hube.Lou Hawkins (Hank's widow) kept picnic tradition alive when she dove into the Mathers pool under the watchful eye of her sister, Linda Harwick (Bill's widow), who was visiting from Rochester, Minn. Others fortunate to be at Gordon Farm were Doc Beach, Al and Jean Brush,John and Barbara Gilbert, HenriettaHage (Bob's widow), Don and MargaretRadasch, Kay Rogers (Paul's widow), "adopted '35ers" Eric and Margo Hawke from Saratoga, N.Y., and add me, Pauland Joanne Cummings.

The next great class event is the mini-reunion in Hanover October 3-4. BillFitzhugh is in charge—get your green reservation cards to him soon. BillGahagan has an August 24-September 21 Robert Frost/Longwood tennis itinerary taking him to several East Coast destinations, including Gordon Farm. Possiblymore on that in the November column.
