Congratulations to Lyn Brock—host with wife Claudie of this past May's superb spring 1997 mini-reunion in Philadelphia who recently took up his responsibilities as new chair of the board of directors of the Kendal Corp. Kendal, on whose board Lyn has served since 1985, is a not-forprofit corporation that has developed a system of communities and services for older people in Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Ohio, New York, and most recendy Virginia. The guiding spirit of the service that underlies Kendal and like-minded organizations was well cap- tured by Lyn in his opening address to the rep- resentatives of the corporation: "What a joy and satisfaction we have by giving of ourselves to others."
From Wilton, Conn., Dick Blodgett reports on two noteworthy results of the class of 1995's giving program: First, through the efforts of 44 classmates designating their gifts to the College's Athletic Sponsor Program, Dartmouth was able to arrange a campus recruitment trip for Dory Tisdale, a men's ice hockey defenseman from faraway British Columbia. Happily, Dory was suitably impressed by his firsthand view of the College, applied and was admitted, and has chosen to join the Dartmouth family with the class of 2001.
Second, through the generosity of 55 classmates who designated their 1996 Class Gift to the Class of 1955 Fund at the Hood Museum with the goal of acquiring a work of art by a New England artist or dealing with a New England theme—the museum has purchased Below Mount Monad nock by Abbott Handerson Thayer, an American painter who lived near Dublin, N.H., in the late 1990s. Of particular interest is that Thayer's "canvas" for this work is the underside of a wooden box lid that originally contained Teddy Roosevelt toilet soap! The painting will be on display when Hood reopens in September, and Dick hopes to have someone from the museum staff on hand during our fall mini-reunion to discuss the work and lead a group to view it along with Hood's other treasures.
On the subject of mini-reunions, class President Brooks Parker informs me of tentative plans to hold our spring 1998 mini-reunion in Chicago. More details should be available in time for next month's column. Stay tuned!
Also in the future is a special issue of the magazine for which I earnesly solicit your contributions. For March 1998 the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine is planning an all-out issue celebrating athletics at Dartmouth. As in the case of this past March's memorable issue on women at Dartmouth, we want to use the theme of athletics to build and organize this column for that issue. So please do provide me with information about your and your spouses' memories and activities concerning athletics, both at Dartmouth and during the years since Dartmouth. My deadline is the second week of November, just a few weeks after you are reading this column. I know there are some great stories out there, and I look forward to hearing from each of you. Fill my mailbox, my fax, and my e-mail!
