Since our last column we have lost four more men to the grim reaper. We learned that HankHastings died sometime during the current year but have yet to get the details. George Walden died on July 16 in California, Al Abbott on the 27th of August at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, and after a long illness, LouHighmark on September 2, in Indianapolis. (Obits in this or a later issue).

Betty Lou and Mike Ellis left on September 14 for a two-week trip to the Greek Islands. While on the subject of travelers, our prexy, Bert MacMannis, with wife Sally, put in some time in Dorset and Dover, England, to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on October 3 and his birthday on October 5. To do this he missed his first mini-reunion since taking office as president, but we don't know anyone who has faulted him on his celebrations. Bob and Evie Kaiser spent the last weekend in August at his WWII division's reunion in Burlington, Vt. Kay and Harry Edmondson are living what Harry calls a contemplative life in Santa Barbara with golf, the beach, and visits along the coast to see their children. Harry was kind enough to send me an LA Times article— on alumni columns in various college magazines—in which Dartmouth was quoted, but not the class of 1939. We received a copy of a thank-you letter that Jim Corner had written to his hard-working crew of agents. In a footnote to us in his inimitable handwriting, he says, "They are a superb group and sturdy as well. It's a bit disappointing to see that 87 graduates did not contribute. On the other hand, as the economists say, it's great that 163 did." It is hard to believe that we are confronting another Christmas. We wish one and all a jolly Christmas, and a hope that 1998 will treat you. and yours, kindly.
