I begin this month's column with positive news about lawyers. As a profession, they are generally maligned, and so I am Baking a tentative step toward redressing the balance.

First off, an item about two lawyers who married each other. Carl Walker, an attorney for St. John & Wayne in Newark, N.J., got married Sept. 14 to Amy Held, who works for a New York City firm. The ceremony took place at a lovely oceanside hotel in Spring Lake, N.J., with a spectacular pounding surf as a backdrop.

Carl reports that married life is great, and that he and Amy actually see each other occasionally because they have both been working for a while and no longer have to do quite as much grunt work. Now if we could just work on his golf game...

Jeff Carlisle has been hired as an attorney by Preti, Flaherty, Beliveau & Pachios, a firm that has offices in Portland and Augusta, Maine. He works with the firm's litigation practice group and also has one of the coolest clients I can possibly think of: the Portland Mountain Cats basketball team.

Moving beyond lawyers, The Seattle Times had an interesting article recently about Janine Bowechop, who was serving as interim executive director of the Makah Museum. The museum, located in the northwestern tip of Washington state, features native American artifacts and draws 17,000 visitors a year. Aaron "Stolpa"Straight writes that he is finishing his doctorate in biochemistry at the University of California-San Francisco. He works in a lab with two Dartmouth '94s, Alex Szidon and Marion Shonn.

From the offbeat uses for poutry department: Kara Kelly Milner recently attended a dinner where a chicken was sacrificed, according to Linda Kelly. This is no joke. Apparently it had to do with one of Kara's co-workers who was trying to bestow good luck on their project at the Museum of Natural History. Linda, who is no relation to Kara, is still working for Ryder Trucks as a congressional liaison. I expect a full report from her on the dynamics of the newly elected Congress.

Also in the Beltway area, Kurt Moser has a new job as network administrator for Georgetown Day School. He also continues to work with a number of other clients who need the bugs worked out in their computer systems.

That's all for this month. I suffered from a dearth of news. Please send more!
