Some of you have asked for news about me, which I will reluctantly provide, only because it's so wacky. I recently wrote a story for the Philadelphia Inquirer about how New Jersey Governor Christie Whitman is naming a highway rest stop for the legendary Howard Stern. Somehow, radio's bad boy got a copy of the story, and he proceeded to trash it (and me) on the air. He was mostly ragging on the people who were against using his name (NOW, the NAACP, and a veteran's group that already had a plaque at the rest area), but I received an adequate amount of abuse.
On the subject of newspapering, I recently talked to fellow journalist Debbi Wilgoren, who is now the religion writer for The Washington Post. In true journalistic fashion, Debbie passed on a wealth of information about our classmates. On the subject of those inside the Beltway: Kara Kelly has gotten a job at the Smithsonian and is in love with a six-foot-four entrepeneur-philanthropist. Zach Levine and Jen Avellino have bought a house in Alexandria, Va. Lisa Baker lives with her husband and their baby boy, Eric, in Montreal, where she is working toward her Ph.D. at McGill University.
Other news of classmates: Chris and JenGoulard have bought a house in the powder capital of the U.S.: Park City, Utah. (I hate you, Chris.) He works for Fidelity Mutual Funds, and she's in sales for orthopedic braces. Presumably she sells a lot of those in ski country.
Lots of baby-making to report: Amy BeardVachris is due May 9, so she will take off her last month of teaching languages at Blair Academy in Blairstown, N.J. The baby is expected to emerge from the womb fully conversant in English, Spanish, and French. Nancy Bernard Felix gave birth to baby William on February 6 in Montclair, N.J. He weighed in at eight pounds, three ounces.
Catherine Truman reports that she is in her first year at Yale architecture school, drowning in work but loving it. Somehow she found the time to run in the New York marathon. Amy Holden is also at Yale, Catherine says, and is working toward a Ph.D. in medieval studies. Catherine also ran into Lindsay Brace at Yale's Forestry and Business schools. Whether Lindsay is actually studying there was left open to my interpretation.
Catherine adds that Jill Schoenberg is doing well in Los Angeles, and CarolyneAllen is working for Adantic in New York City. Those last two tidbits are tantalizingly brief, so perhaps Jill and Carolyne will be moved to offer more information.
It has already been reported that CaseyEngelman is engaged to Tom Livingston, an '89 from the University of Illinois. But Casey wrote me with an update: "Tom very much enjoyed his Dartmouth experience over Reunion Weekend. Rob Eleveld approved, and so Tom and I plan to be married next fall." I could have so much fun with that statement that I'm not even going to try.
Adam Glick was married in October to Tufts graduate Lisa Friedman in Brentwood, Calif. (A certain former athlete and rental car spokesman was reportedly not at the ceremony.) Adam is an associate at the Los Angeles law firm of Pregerson, Richman & Luna, and Lisa in an associate director of public affairs at the Constitutional Rights Foundation in L.A.
By the way, I have received lots of mail and information from several of you. Many thanks. Don't be alarmed if your news doesn't show up in the column right away. There can be a lag time of up to three months since JeanneDe Sa writes every other column, and because these magazines take a long time to put together. For example, my deadline for this column was February 15. So keep it coming!
