Knowing that you will be reading this in April still doesn't keep me from expounding on the beauty of Hanover in winter, and this has been a real one. The Dartmouth Club of the Upper Valley held a Saturday seminar on financial planning in the Hayward Lounge of the Inn. The content was good, but the views out the big windows were tough competition. One way it was the ever-changing colorful down and fleece-clad pedestrian parade on Main Street. The other way it was the tranquil expanse of the Green, under its clean white coat. Special place, no doubt about it.

Our president, Moe Frye, and Jane have returned to Beacon Hill from their seasonal sojourn in Sanibel, Moe with the decision that rental is better than ownership for snowbirds. Recalling Moe's lifelong realty experience (in partnership with Bud Street), some of you multi-home owners maybe should rethink.

At this writing Harry and PegHampton are heading for Arizona and four back-to-back Elderhostel programs plus two weeks on their own. I have touted the advantages of Elderhostels before; the Hamptons four in a row certainly make the point. Their travels testify also to Harry's happy recovery from a multiple bypass. He's grateful to Dr. Dick Shaw '65 (DMS '66), "who did the knife and needle work for me."

Harry's recovery period was enlivened by reading The Collected Stories of Evan S.Connell. Evan is '45's renowned novelist, essayist, and poet, whose works deserve reading by all classes. Ask your librarian or order from Daedalus Books at (800) 395-2665. Harry says about Evan, "There has not been a moment's restlessness or unfocussed attention when reading something off his typewriter."

Howard and Roseanne Germain are just as involved in their Santa Barbara community as they were back in Hilton Head. He is teaching English as a second language at U.C.S.B., challenged by instructing mainly Chinese and Japanese women. Knowing Howard, I expect he gives them lessons in laughter too. He also conducts tours of the elegant County Court House in Santa Barbara. Roseanne is working at an extravagant Lotus Land botanical garden in Montecito. Paul andArlene Samek were up from L.A. for dinner and theater with the Germains.

Ray and Bertha O'Crowley's travels last year took them thrice close to the Arctic Circle, first to Alaska via bus, train, boat, and plane. Second to northern Norway for the wedding of Bertha's son and participation in elaborate traditional ceremonies and celebrations. Finally to visit friends in northern Sweden.

Fred and Amy Campbell also did the grand tour of Alaska. Fred has retired from mortgage banking to concentrate on his teaching of history and constitutional law. Fred, based in Colorado Springs, is a director of two associations that cooperate in supporting Rocky Mountain National Park programs.

Bob and Kitty Cate enjoy active lives in Santa Fe. The snow-covered mountain scenery continues to inspire Bob's new career of landscape painting. Santa Fe is a center of galleries and museums that they both frequent. Kitty specializes in research at the Museum of International Folk Art. Bob says, "We have it all here in this delightful spot."

Keep on helping me spread the word about your travels and the fun things you do when you stay home.
