We are into the third week of August as we put together this column for the November issue of the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine. A hot, muggy weather system has been with us on vacation at Falmouth, Cape Cosd for several days, but last night thunderstorms came through, and we are looking forward to three days of cooler dry air and sunshine. The President, pursued by journalists, reporters, voyeurs, and curiosity seekers, escaped Washington and settled on Martha's Vineyard, just five miles across the Vineyard Sound. The Vineyard is around the corner from us, but we did see satellite TV trucks perched on a hillside down at Wood's Hole yesterday. (I guess to provide the world a glimpse of Air Force One from afar.) We hope the President had a restful first night on Martha's Vineyard after his 'fessing up to the nation two evenings ago.
By now, though, perhaps all of this sordid business that pervaded our lives in August has somewhat receded from our attention.
The magazine usually arrives several weeks before the month for which it is named, so as you read this column, we have finished a visit to Hanover for the Dartmouth Night festivities and a minireunion. Class President Charlie Giersch ran the Saturday morning meeting attended by the usual suspects and with the usual questions. Gordy McKean organized another fine weekend for us and explained when and where to show up before the football game and how to get to Ascutney Mountain Resort for a bang-up evening of renewing friendships and dinner. Familiar questions were posed. What should the class dues be? (Can anyone remember what the class dues are now?) How is our class doing with the Alumni Fund? John Walters presented an informal but incisive report. John Clark, drawing on his long experience and keen interest in the College, made some salient points. Tom Komarek, acting newsletter editor, explained that Gordy Williamson is taking a well-deserved leave of absence from his years of superb work with the newsletter. Thanks, Gordy! Tom also spoke enthusiastically about the 60th birthday bash in London and Ireland coming ing up this July. Bill Sadd, currently vice president and fomerly treasurer, reviewed the balance sheet of the class treasury and spoke again about our wish to complete the funding of the Class of 1962 Faculty Fellowship. In addition to that fine project there is the Memorial Book program. Flow many people in our class know that in memory of each deceased classmate the class donates a book in that member's memory to the library? Charlie Balch, treasurer, had made the journey from Adanta to Hanover for Leadership Weekend in September and is a great addition to the roster.
